Garfield becomes quite existential when translated into Japanese and then back into English. Based off of this website.

A few people have asked for the originals; they are of course at Garfield.com.

  1. What does the [GAHUIRUDO that shows up in some of these signify?

  2. I think that's a phonetic translation of "Garfield" into Japanese. Some English sounds are not represented in Japanese. "fee" becomes "hui," L and R are not distinguished from one another in Japanese so L becomes "Ru" and Japanese is made up of syllables with vowels at the end, so the ending D becomes "do."

  3. Indeed, Garfield translates into Japanese, but not back into English (usually) when using Yahoo! It's a tip-off that I used babelfish instead of the google translator. I was actually thinking of purchasing www.gahuirudo.com, but I sort of feel "Garfield: Lost in Translation" has a certain ring.
